Lens Fabrication & Coatings
We offer a unique expertise in manufacturing precision IR lenses from materials optimized for performance in the infrared spectrum. While they appear opaque to the human eye, these materials offer high transmittance of infrared energy. These materials include:
- Germanium (Ge)
- Silicon (Si)
- Zinc Selenide (ZnSe)
- Zinc Sulfide (ZnS)
- Calcium Fluoride (CaF2)
- Indium Antimonide (InSb)
- Most Glass Types
Shape, Grind & Polish
The manufacturing of optics has evolved through the years, although the principles remain the same. An optical component is roughed into shape using diamond impregnated tools. This is followed by the grinding process which hones in on the required radius while smoothing the surface in preparation of polishing. The polishing process finishes the optical surface to the specified accuracy (wavefront) and quality (scratch/dig).
The advances in technology over the last decade have increased the speed in which high quality optics can be produced. Most notably is the use of CNC equipment, which allows for both standard and unusual shapes to be produced quickly with a high level of precision on a consistent basis. General Dynamics leverages these advances in technology to be on the cutting edge of optics manufacturing.
With 20 years of diamond turning experience, our engineers are able to maximize production efficiency to deliver unmatched quality, precision and consistency at competitive pricing. General Dynamics can diamond turn most infrared crystals and certain metals into the spherical, aspheric and diffractive surfaces, which are common in today's infrared optical designs.
